Emily joined Orms in 2024 following a year at Bennetts Associates, where she worked on the construction phase of a commercial project in London's Kings Cross masterplan and a mixed cultural/commercial project in India. She holds a Bachelor and Masters of Architecture from the University of Nottingham. During her studies, Emily gained teaching experience as an undergraduate assistant tutor in her final year, developing her communication and mentoring skills.
What does ultrapractical mean to you? My thesis explored the expression of collective memory in post-industrial buildings and landscapes, examining how localised industries might resurge in a post-carbon world. At Orms, this interest in historical context and adaptation continues through my work on Custom House, a Grade I listed building in the City of London. I assist in preparing planning information for this hotel-led refurbishment, including the design of external awnings informed by historical research. To me, being ultrapractical means finding innovative ways to honour a building's heritage while ensuring it meets contemporary needs and delivers public benefit.
