A sensitive renovation of a cluster of a medieval manor and traditional farm buildings in East Sussex.
Sussex, in south-east England, is famous for its traditional agricultural buildings, not least the barns and oast houses at Great Dixter, which were reworked – along with the surrounding gardens – by Edwin Lutyens. This country estate, like Great Dixter, is focused on a Grade II-listed medieval manor house and a cluster of outbuildings including a barn and oast house.
Orms’ work, which epitomises the practice’s pragmatic yet sensitive approach to working with historic buildings, comprises the extension, reorganisation and renovation of these existing buildings, along with the construction of contemporary elements including a garage and potting shed. The project also includes the transformation of 80 acres of park and garden, restoring the buildings’ relationship with their natural landscape.
