Ruby Mears

Architectural Assistant

BArch (Hons), MArch

Ruby joined Orms in 2025 as a Part II Architectural Assistant, bringing with her a strong interest in phenomenological and human-centric design. Her thesis at The London School of Architecture challenged the efficiency-driven model of healthcare, instead proposing a holistic and domestic approach through non-hierarchical organisations and prioritisation of specific user needs during brain injury recovery. Prior to graduating from The London School of Architecture, Ruby worked as an architectural assistant at Atelier Gooch, where she contributed to both film studio masterplans and private residential projects, and developed a particular interest in working sensitively with buildings of historic and cultural significance.

What does ultrapractical mean to you?

Being ultrapractical means grounding design decisions in real human needs while responding sensitively to context and heritage. My experience with historic buildings has taught me that practical solutions emerge through careful listening—to clients, to buildings, and to communities. It's about iterative design development through drawing, to test ideas rigorously before implementation. Ultrapractical design isn't just buildable; it's thoughtful, adaptable and enriches everyday life, while preserving what matters from the past for future generations.
